Tri-ang Hornby Railways
R.354 G.W.R. 4-2-2 'Lord of the Isles' Locomotive and Tender
with Gloss Finish to Paintwork
The very first gloss finish Lord of the Isles were made as a special run of 1000 models in 1967 in order to fulfill outstanding orders from certain retailers and were advertised by them as a 'Limited Run'. The box is the DPL2 window box, the label on the box has the code (03/244) on it and the Locomotive has the Mark IIId couplings whilst the Tender has Mark IIIc couplings. This is quite specific to this issue of the model.
Please see Pat Hammond's 'The Story of Rovex' Volume 2, pages 155 and 156.
The later 1970 onwards production models had a rather treacle-ly poor quality lacquered finish initially which was later overcome but the paintwork on these models looks noticeably different.
